About Me Marcel Tworek

My name is Marcel Tworek and I am currently a senior at the University of Dayton studying as a History major with minors in Sociology and Film Studies. I am originally from the Chicago-land area of Illinois and live in a town called Westchester where I have lived my whole life, up until this point. On campus I work for Housing and Residence Life as a Desk Assistant for the South Student Neighborhood. After graduation I hope to work in a museum, in archives, or for the National Park Service. At UD I am the President of the Delta-Eta chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta history society whose goal is spreading and encouraging the discussion of history. And this past semester I worked at the UD Archives where I created a timeline based around the UD Arena and musical performances that took place there.

Outside of my academic career, I spend my time watching movies and learning new music to play on my guitar. Along with these two hobbies, I plan on visiting all 419 U.S. National Parks which has been done by less than 100 people. I have had an interest in studying history ever since I was in 4th or 5th grade when I went to Springfield, Illinois on a vacation with my family and I learned all about our former President, Abraham Lincoln. From that point on, Lincoln has been a role model for me and shaped me into the lover of history that I am today and will always be.

This photo showcases a room in a typical apartment at the Fourth Street building of the Dayton Arcade. This was an arched window apartment which typically would have wood flooring and some apartments had china cabinets already installed. This specific photo was taken in 2017 during a tour of the Arcade courtesy of WHIO.com. Even after all these years it still is in relatively good condition, at least from what we can see. However, there appear to be pieces of the ceiling and wall on the floor and there are some cracks running along the wall.

So far in my research for my project on Living at the Arcade I have come across some secondary sources that may help me write my essay. There was an article on what it is like to live in apartments in a city and also a article on what social life in cities can be like. An interesting article I found discusses women’s fashion and how it relates to their social lives which covers 50 years from 1900-1950. I’m not yet sure if I will be able to utilize that source very well but we will see. I have begun searching for some primary resources to help me write my essay, but as of yet I have not found much. I am wondering how much I will be able to find, but if I cannot find much on the Dayton Arcade I will have to look at other Arcades and how it was like to live there or near them.

This photo taken in 2019 shows the decay the Third Street facade has gone through since the Arcade closed down.

This image shows what the entrance to an apartment would have looked like in the Third Street/Gibbons apartments.
